INTEXT QUESTIONS SOLUTIONS

Q. 1. Do you think the ‘Circle of Justice’ is an appropriate term to describe the relationship between the king and his subjects?

Ans. ‘Circle of Justice’ is an appropriate term to describe the relationship between the king and his subjects, because they were dependent on each other for their requirements.

Q. 2. Express Minhaj’s ideas in your words. Do you think Razia shared these ideas? Why do you think it was so difficult for a woman to be a ruler?

Ans. Minhaj’s idea was that woman is subordinate to men because God provided excellent qualities to men, which are not found in women. This was the common view of that society. Razia would have definitely not shared these ideas. In light of these circumstances, we can understand it was very difficult for a woman to become a ruler.

EXERCISE QUESTIONS SOLUTIONS

Q. 1. Which ruler first established her or his capital at Delhi?

Ans. Tomar Rajputs first established Delhi as their capital.

Q. 2. What was the language of administration under the Delhi Sultans?

Ans. Persian was the administrative language under the Delhi Sultans.

Q. 3. In whose reign did the Sultanate reach its farthest extent?

Ans. In the reign of Muhammad Tughluq, the Sultanate reached its farthest extent.

Q. 4. From which country did Ibn Battuta travel to India?

Ans. Ibn Battuta travelled to India from Morocco.

Q. 5. According to the ‘Circle of Justice’ why was it important for military commanders to keep the interests of the peasantry in mind?

Ans. The peasantry was the backbone of the entire kingdom. The king could not do anything without it because it was the source of revenue. The soldiers got their salaries from this revenue. Hence, it was necessary to keep the peasants happy and prosperous because only then they could be able to pay revenue. That’s why the military commanders kept the interests of the peasantry at the top.

Q. 6. What is meant by the “internal” and “external” frontiers of the Sultanate?

Ans. The ‘internal’ frontiers of the sultanate refer to the ‘hinterland’ of the garrison towns. The ‘external’ frontiers, on the other hand, refer to the areas beyond the hinterland of the garrison towns that included the unconquered territories, especially in the southern parts of India.

Q. 7. What were the steps taken to ensure that muqtis performed their duties? Why do you think they may have wanted to defy the orders of the Sultans?

Ans. The following steps were taken by Delhi Sultans to ensure that muqtis performed their duties:
(i) Land grants or iqtas were not inheritable.
(ii) They were assigned iqtas for a short period of time.
(iii) Accountants were appointed by the state to check the amount of revenue collected by the muqtis.
(iv) Care was taken that the muqti collected only the taxes prescribed by the state and that he kept the required number of soldiers.
(v) The revenue collection from iqtas was in the hand of muqtis, who deducted his share (his salary + army expenses) and paid the surplus to the Sultanate. There was a high chance they might misuse the revenue for their own good or to revolt against the Sultanate.
The muqtis may have wanted to defy the order of the Sultan because their appointment was not hereditary. Also, their job was transferable. Besides all these, the harsh conditions of service were severely imposed on them which they did not like.

Q.8. Do you think the authors of tawarikh would provide information about the lives of ordinary men and women?

Ans. No. I don’t think so. It is because:
(i) The authors of tawarikh lived in cities (mainly in Delhi) and hardly in villages.
(ii) They often wrote their histories for Sultans in the hope of rich rewards.
(iii) They advised rulers on the need to preserve an ‘ideal’ social order based on birthright and gender distinctions.
(iv) They had nothing to do with common mass, therefore, the authors of tawarikh would not provide information about ordinary men and women.

Q. 9. Razia Sultan was unique in the history of the Delhi Sultanate. Do you think women leaders are accepted more readily today?

Ans. Razia Sultan, though a capable ruler, was not accepted by Turkish nobles. They were not comfortable having a queen as ruler. Her regime ended within four years.
Today, women leaders are accepted more readily. They have become the President and Prime Minister of our nation. Still, there are challenges they have to face due to gender bias.

Q. 10. Why were the Delhi Sultans interested in cutting down forests? Does deforestation occur for the same reasons today?

Ans. The Delhi Sultans cleared the forests in the GangaYamuna doab and gave these lands to peasants in order to encourage agriculture. They also established new fortresses and towns in these lands to protect trade routes and promote regional trade.
No, today deforestation does not occur for the same reason. Nowadays over-population, urbanisation and commercialisation are the main reasons for such activities.

Q. 11. Find out whether there are any buildings built by the Delhi Sultans in your area. Are there any other buildings in your area that were built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries? Describe some of these buildings and draw sketches of them.

Ans. There are very few buildings in our area made by Delhi Sultans. One is Jama Masjid in Shaikhon Ka Mohalla at Fatehpur Sikri. Another one is also a mosque in Mohalla Sheikh Chutwa. This mosque was built by Alauddin Khalji. There is also a tomb of Makkdum Shah. Other buildings made by Delhi Sultans in our area were destroyed by Mughal rulers and they made their forts on the remains of these buildings.

The Jama Masjid has three ways, each terminated by an ogival mehrab. The central one is more deeply carved than the others, contains a perforated stone screen with a stylish eight-petalled lotus and is enclosed within an ogee. The blank spaces are filled by rosettes, above all the Kalima is inscribed in naksh lettering and on either side, Quranic verses.
